The Erie Canal is celebrating the bicentennial of its completion this year. Cities, towns and villages across the 360-mile route are planning activities to recognize this milestone. The Greece Historical Society is joining the celebration this summer with a few activities of its own. One activity that you can get started on right now is a self-guided “passport” of key locations in town that were associated with the canal.
A Heritage Trail Passport: South Greece on the Erie Canal, created by the GHS Erie Canal Bicentennial Committee, gives you a peek at Greece canal history with 29 stops in South Greece. The 24-page booklet has space available to check off each site and note the date you saw it.
Please Note: Most of these sites are private and not open to the public, but you are welcome to view them from the road or canal trail.
You can pick up a Passport at the gift shop in the Greece Museum, 595 Long Pond Road, on Sundays from 1:30 PM to 4 PM, or at any of the Greece Historical Society’s upcoming Erie Canal 200 events in August and September. Once you complete your passport, return to the Greece Museum to be entered into a drawing for a one-year membership to the Greece Historical Society.
