7:00 pm: The Late Great Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Co.

September 10, 2024

The Late Great Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Co. by Donovan Shilling

7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, Greece Central School District’s Transportation & Support Service Facility, 1790 Latta Road.

Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Co. may have started as a simple dry goods store in 1868 at 73 Main Street, but following a devastating fire in 1904 it was rebuild and eventually become the largest department store between New York City and Chicago. Join us as we learn the history of this iconic store and the legacy and memories it left behind.

Donovan Shilling, a native of Fairport, has written more than a dozen books about the history of Rochester. He is a retired middle school science teacher and administrator, has taught classes on local history to adults at the Rochester Museum and Science Center for more than 20 years and is a long-time member of the Greece Historical Society.

5:30 pm: Remember School No 5

October 3, 2024

The Greece Historical Society will join the Greece Central School District for a dedication of the memorial wall built to remember the old Greece School No. 5, which once stood at 1790 Latta Road. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the GSCD Transportation building which now occupies the site of the former school and is open to the Community.

The dedication will include a land acknowledgement read by students at Paddy Hill and the unveiling of a time capsule which will be placed inside the wall. The time capsule will include letters from students, letter from Superintendent Kathy Graupman, old and current maps for the Town of Greece, solar eclipse glasses, history book about School No. 5, and a photo of the Board of Trustees from the Greece Historical Society. It will also include the contents from the 1930-time capsule (coins, newspapers, class roster, letter from school Superintendent and ledger of architects).

There will be a small reception after the event. The event is free, and all are invited
