Biography
John Williams, Esquire (1770-1846), is the first Supervisor of the Town of Greece at its creation in 1822. John was born in Northeast, Dutchess County, New York where he also met and married his wife Rebecca Farrington (c. 1775-1851). In 1808 John and his family spent 6 weeks traveling to settle on 163 acres along the Ridge Road where the Mall at Greece Ridge is now, in the town then named Northampton. The location of his farm became Gates in 1813 and finally Greece in 1822. The couple had 9 known children. John was very resourceful in the wilderness with few neighbors. He filled the roles of farmer, mechanic, gunsmith, silversmith, carpenter, joiner, tanner, courier, shoemaker, tailor, and harness maker in addition of his civic roles. The family were founding members of the First Congregational Church of Parma and Greece, then later converting to Methodist.
