7:00 pm: The Architecture of James H. Johnson7:00 pm: The Architecture of James H. Johnson – The Architecture of James H. Johnson During his lengthy career in Rochester, architect James H. Johnson was acclaimed for several of his unusual designs, including the Liberty Pole, the "Mushroom House," and St. John the Evangelist Church in the town of Greece. Most of his other projects received little attention as Johnson quietly followed his own highly creative path, designing buildings of remarkable creativity inspired by forms in nature and complex geometry. Christopher and Katie spent 18 months exploring Johnson's drawings and slides, interviewing his colleagues and family members, and visiting his buildings, They will be sharing what they learned in this talk featuring new and old photographs of Johnson's projects, from his most celebrated works to some of the strangest hidden architectural treasures in western New York. The project documenting Johnson's career was organized and sponsored by the Greece Historical Society, and was funded by grants from the Preservation League of New York State, the Landmark Society of Western New York, and the Johnson family. |
